Chapter 10

Ray has a death grip on the handle of the truck's door as the truck bounds over another deep rut. The road seems to be made of nothing but ruts and he wonders how the government sedan had managed to even get this far along without a major failure. Ray swallows a small squeal when the hind end of the truck slews to the right and Ray is looking out of the side window at the cacti coming perilously close before the truck collects itself again.

"Think we can slow down just a little? I would like to get to her in one piece." Ray tightens his grip on the arm rest.

"Sorry," Sheriff Brenner says. "On a road like this, the best thing to do is to keep moving, and fast. It's too easy to get bogged down on the sand and bury the truck up to the axles. Would need a tow truck to get it out then."

Ray nods and keeps his eyes forward. He manages a small smile, but he doesn't mean it. All he can think of is the trouble Sally could be in.

The truck grinds its way up a small incline and once they reach the top, Sheriff Brenner points. "There's the cabin. Looks like they have company."

Sheriff Brenner down shifts and they speed down the other side of the hill.

Ray takes in the scene down at the cabin. The sedan is parked underneath a small tree to keep the worst of the sun off it. His eyes follow along to the cabin and he sees what the sheriff pointed out. Two bats are on the roof, tearing at the tin panels and trying to get inside. They used the tiny claws at the end of their leathery wings to rip at the weak metal, pulling it up in bits. By the looks of it, it won't be long before they manage to make their way inside.

"Hurry, Sheriff, please."

It seems to take forever for them to make the quarter mile distance down the hill to the cabin. When they do, Ray grabs the door handle and pushes it open before the truck even stops. A cloud of dust follows closely behind, leaving Ray in a coughing fit before he can escape it and rush toward the cabin.

"You trying to kill yourself?" Sheriff Brenner rushes up behind him, gun drawn. "Not gonna do Sally much good if you are squished under the tires of a pickup."

Ray ignores the sheriff and pushes at the door. Locked. He pounds his shoulder against it, trying to force his way in, but the door doesn't budge.

"Move out the way."

Ray steps back and lets the sheriff kick at the door, his foot connects right beside the doorknob. It takes two kicks, but the door explodes inward and Ray rushes in.

The bats have made it inside and Ray sees Sally crouching in a corner, screaming.

Sheriff Brenner rushes in, gun in hand, and takes a bead on one of the bats and pulls the trigger.
